About Makin’ Whoopee
This song was written for the 1928 musical Whoopee!, which starred Eddie Cantor and who introduced the song. It does, of course, refer to sexual intimacy and lists all the things that follow from that (wedding, honeymoon, babies, etc.). It has been widely recorded over the years.

Lyrics

Every time I hear that dear old wedding march
I feel rather glad I have a broken arch
I have heard a lot of people talk
And I know that marriage is a long long walk

To most people
Weddings mean romance
But I prefer
A picnic or a dance

Another bride, another groom
Another sunny honeymoon
Another season, another reason
For making whoopee

The chorus sings, “Here comes the bride”
Another victim is by her side
He’s lost his reason ’cause it’s the season
For making whoopee

Down through the countless ages
You’ll find it everywhere
Somebody makes good wages
Somebody wants her share

She calls him “Toodles” and rolls her eyes
She makes him strudles and bakes him pies
What is it all for?
It’s so he’ll fall for making whoopee

Another year or maybe less
What’s this I hear, well, can’t you guess?
She feels neglected, so he’s suspected
Of making whoopee

She sits alone most every night
He doesn’t phone or even write
He says he’s busy, but she says, “Is he?”
He’s making whoopee

He doesn’t make much money
Five thousand dollars per
Some judge who thinks he’s funny
Says, “You’ll pay six to her”

He says, “Now judge, suppose I fail?”
The judge says, “Budge right into jail”
You better keep her, you’ll find it’s cheaper
Than making whoopee

About Let’s Do It
Cole Porter wrote “Let’s Do It” for his first Broadway success, Paris, in 1928. It’s a great example of Cole Porter’s list songs.

Lyrics

Birds do it, bees do it
Even educated fleas do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love

In Spain, the best upper sets do it
Lithuanians and Letts do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love

The Dutch in old Amsterdam do it
Not to mention the Finns
Folks in Siam do it – think of Siamese twins

Some Argentines, without means, do it
People say in Boston even beans do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love

Electric eels I might add do it
Though it shocks ’em I know
Why ask if shad do it – Waiter bring me shad roe

In shallow shoals English soles do it
Goldfish in the privacy of bowls do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love

Let’s do it let’s fall in love
let’s do it, let’s fall in love!

About I’ve Got A Crush On You
This song was first used in the 1928 musical Treasure Girl, where it was introduced by Clifton Webb and May Hay and again in 1930 for Strike Up The Band, where it was sung by Doris Caron and Gordon Smith.  It’s been widely sung jazz vocalists, including Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Lyrics

How glad a million laddies
From millionaires to caddies
Would be
To capture me!
But you had such persistence
You wore down my resistance
I fell
And it was swell
You’re my big and brave and handsome Romeo
How I won you, I shall never, never knowIt’s not that you’re attractive
But, oh, my heart grew active
When you came into viewI’ve got a crush on you, sweetie pie
All the day and night-time, hear me sigh
I never had the least notion
That I could fall with so much emotionCould you coo?
Could you care
For a cunning cottage we could share?
The world will pardon my mush
‘Cause I’ve got a crush, my baby, on you

I’ve got a crush on you, sweetie pie
All the day and night-time, hear me sigh
This isn’t just a flirtation
We’re proving that there’s predestination

About I’ll Get By
Even though released before the 1929 stock market crash, “I’ll Get By” is a perfect depression-era song, as the lyrics tell us, you don’t need lots of money as long as there’s love to see you through. The song was a popular hit when it was released, with recordings by Ruth Eating, Aileen Stanley and the Ipana Troubadours. “I’ll Get By” was favorite of Billie Holiday, who recorded it many times. The song had a major revival in 1943 when Irene Dunne sang it in a war movie called A Guy Named Joe, in which she co-starred with Spencer Tracy.

Lyrics

I’ll get by
As long as I have you
Oh there be rain
And darkness too
I’ll not complain
I’ll live with you
Poverty
May come to me that’s true
But what care I
I’ll get by
As long as I have you

Ah, but tears may come to me
That’s true
But what care I, say
I’ll get by, as long as I have you

About I Got Rhythm
George Gershwin originally wrote this song with a slow tempo for the 1928 musical Treasure Girl. In 1930 for Girl Crazy, he decided on a faster rhythm. The song was introduced by Ethel Merman and became wildly popular based on her performance. It has been recorded many times by artists including Miss Merman, Fred Astaire, John Pizzarelli and Ethel Waters. It’s one of the great jazz standards.

Lyrics

I got rhythm, I got music, I got my gal
Who could ask for anything more?
I’ve got daisies in green pastures
I’ve got my man
Who could ask for anything more?

Old man trouble I don’t mind him
You won’t find him ’round my door
I’ve got starlight
I’ve got sweet dreams
I’ve got my gal
Who could ask for anything more?

Old man trouble, I don’t mind him
You won’t find him ’round my door
I’ve got starlight
I’ve got sweet dreams
I’ve got my gal
Who could ask for anything more?

Oh, I’ve got rhythm
I’ve got music
I’ve got daisies in green pastures
I’ve got starlight
I’ve got sweet dreams
I’ve got my gal
Who could ask for anything more?

I’ve got rhythm
Who could ask for anything more?
Who could ask for anything more?
