About The Lady Is a Tramp
This song was written for the Broadway musical Babes In Arms, where it was introduced by Mitzi Green. The song was meant as a spoof on the high society of New York, where the singer is clear about what she likes to do, no matter what everyone else is doing. “The Lady Is A Tramp” has been sung by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne. More recently, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga sang a duet of this song on their 2011 album “Duets II.”

Lyrics

She wined and dined on mulligan stew
And never wished for turkey
As she hitched and hiked and grifted too
From Maine to Albuquerque
Alas, she missed the Beaux Arts Ball, and what is twice as sad
I was never at a party where they honored Noel Ca-ad (Coward)
But social circles spin too fast to see
The “hobohemia” is the place to be

She gets too hungry, for dinner at eight
She likes the theater, but never comes late
She never bothers with people she hates
That’s why the lady is a tramp

She won’t like crap games, with barons or earls
Won’t go to Harlem, in ermine and pearls
Won’t dish the dirt, with the rest of the girls
That’s why the lady is a tramp

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
Life without care
She’s broke, and it’s o’k
She hates California, it’s cold and it’s damp
That’s why the lady is a tramp

She loves the free, fresh wind in her hair
Life without care
She’s broke, it’s o’k
She hates California, it’s cold and it’s damp
That’s why the lady is a tramp

That’s why the lady is a tramp

About I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm
“I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm” was written for the 1937 movie On The Avenue, starring Dick Powell and Alice Faye, who introduced the song in the movie. Billie Holiday recorded it 1937 as did Mildred Bailey. Other notable recordings include those by Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Doris Day.

Lyrics

The snow is snowing, the wind is blowing
But I can weather the storm!
What do I care how much it may storm?
I’ve got my love to keep me warm.
I can’t remember a worse December
Just watch those icicles form!
What do I care if icicles form?
I’ve got my love to keep me warm.

Off with my overcoat, off with my glove
I need no overcoat, I’m burning with love!
My heart’s on fire, the flame grows higher
So I will weather the storm!
What do I care how much it may storm?
I’ve got my love to keep me warm.

Off with my overcoat, off with my glove
I need no overcoat, I’m burning with love!
My heart’s on fire, the flame grows higher
I will weather the storm!
What do I care how much it may storm?
I’ve got my love, I’ve got my love,
I’ve got my love to keep me warm.

About I Wish I Were In Love Again
Rodgers and Hart wrote “I Wish I Were In Love Again” for the 1937 musical Babes in Arms. It was a favorite song of Judy Garland, who recorded it in 1940. Other recordings include those by Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Audra McDonald.

Lyrics

You don’t know that I felt good
When we up and parted
You don’t know I knocked on wood
Gladly broken hearted
Worrying is through
I sleep all night
Appetite and health restored
You don’t know how much I’m bored

The sleepless nights – the daily fights
The quick toboggan – when you reach the heights
I miss the kisses – and I miss the bites
I wish I were in love again

The broken dates – the endless waits
The lovely loving – and the hateful hates
The conversation – with the flying plates
I wish I were in love again

No more pain – no more strain
Now I’m sane – but I would rather be punch – drunk

The pulled out fur – of cat and cur
The fine mismating – of a him and her
I’ve learned my lesson – but I wish I were
In love again

The furtive sigh – the blackened eye
The words: “I love you – ’til the day I die”
The self deception – that believes the lie
I wish I were in love again

When love congeals – it soon reveals
The faint aroma – of performing seals
The double-crossing – of a pair of heels
I wish I were in love again

No, no more care – no, no despair
Now I’m all there (now) – but I’d rather be punchdrunk

Believe me sir – I much prefer
The classic battle – of a him and her
I don’t like quiet – and I wish I were
In love again – in love again – in love again

About I See Your Face Before Me
This song was written for the 1937 Broadway musical Between The Devil, where it was introduced by Adele Dixon. Both Guy Lombardo and Glen Gray recorded the song in that time period. Later recordings include those by Frank Sinatra and Johnny Hartman. The Johnny Hardman version, recorded in 1955, was used in the soundtrack for the 1995 movie The Bridges of Madison County.

Lyrics

In a world of glitter and glow
In a world of tinsel and show
The unreal from the real thing is hard to know
I discovered somebody who
Could be truly worthy and true
Yes, I met my ideal thing when I met you

I see your face before me
Crowding my every dream
There is your face before me
You are my only theme

It doesn’t matter where you are
I can see how fair you are
I close my eyes and there you are
Always

If you could share the magic
Yes, if you could see me too
There would be nothing tragic
In all my dreams of you

Would that my love could haunt you so
Knowing I want you so
I can’t erase your
Beautiful face
Before me

About Have You Met Miss Jones?
Rodgers and Hart wrote “Have You Met Miss Jones?” for the musical revue I’d Rather Be Right. It’s one of their sweetest and most charming love songs, as the young man who is introduced to Miss Jones and falls in love immediately. In addition to Bennett’s recording, other significant recordings include those by Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

Lyrics

It happened
I felt it happened
I was awake
I wasn’t blind
I didn’t think
I felt it happened
now I believe in matter over mind.

And now you see we mustn’t wait
the nearest moment that we marry is too late!

Have you met Miss Jones
someone said as we shook hands
She was just Miss Jones to me

Then I said, “Miss Jones
you’re a girl who understands
I’m a man who must be free.”

And all at once I lost my breath
and all at once was scared to death
and all at once I oned the earth and sky!

Now I met Miss Jones
and well keep on meeting till we die
Miss Jones and I
