About Down In The Depths
Cole Porter wrote Down In The Depths for the 1936 musical Red, Hot and Blue. Ethel Merman introduced the song in the musical.

Lyrics

With a million neon rainbows burning below me,
And a million blazing taxis raising a roar,
Here i sit, above the town,
In my pet-paillated gown,
Down in the depths
Of the ninetieth floor.

While the crowds in all the nightclubs punish the parquet,
And the bars are packed with couples calling for more,
I’m deserted and depressed
In my regal-eagle nest,
Down in the depths
Of the ninetieth floor.
When the only one you wanted wants another,
What’s the use of swank and cash in the bank galore?
Why, even the janitor’s wife
Has a perfectly good love life,
And here i am, facing tomorrow,
Alone in my sorrow,
Down in the depths
Of the ninetieth floor.

Day In – Day Out

About Day In, Day Out
“Day In, Day Out” has been a favorite of vocalists since it was written. The tune itself is also rather unusual at 56 measures long. In American Popular Song, Alec Wilder notes that “the melodic line soared and moved across the page like a lovely brush stroke. And it had, remarkable for any pop song, passion.” It has been recorded by many of the finest vocalists, including Ella Fitzgerald, Nat “King” Cole, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé and Margaret Whiting.

Lyrics

Day in-day out
The same old voodoo follows me about
The same old pounding in my heart
Whenever I think of you and darling, I think of you
Day in and day out

Day out-day in
I needn’t tell you how my days begin
When I awake I awaken with a tingle
One possibility in view
That possibility of maybe seeing you

Come rain-come shine
I meet you and to me the day is fine
Then I kiss your lips and the pounding becomes
The oceans roar, a thousand drums
Can’t you see it’s love? Can there be any doubt
When there it is, day in-day out?

About Caravan
Caravan is one of the most popular Duke Ellington songs and has been recorded steadily over the years. In Jazz Standards, Al Gioia attributes it’s popularity as a jazz song due to “the composition’s adaptability to a modernistic, modal-based approach.”

Lyrics

Night and stars above that shine so bright
The myst’ry of their fading light
That shines upon our caravan

Sleep upon my shoulder as we creep
Across the sand so I may keep
The mem’ry of our caravan

This is so exciting
You are so inviting
Resting in my arms
As I thrill to the magic charms

Of you beside me here beneath the blue
My dream of love is coming true
Within our desert caravan!
