About Silent Night | |
“Silent Night” was first performed on Christmas Eve, 1818 at St. Nicholas Church in the village of Oberndorf. Joseph Mohr was a young priest, who had written the lyrics to the song the year prior. Gruber, a teacher and the church organist, put the lyrics to music. The lyrics were translated into English in 1859. |
Lyrics
Silent night, Holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin , mother and child
Holy infant so, tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, Holy night
Shepherds quake, at the sight
Glories stream from heaven above
Heavenly, hosts sing Hallelujah.
Christ our Savior is born,
Christ our Savior is born.
Silent night, Holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth
Jesus, Lord at thy birth.
