About Toot, Toot, Tootsie Goodbye
This song is best known by it appearance in The Jazz Singer, the first “talking picture” that revolutionized Hollywood filmmaking overnight. “Toot, Toot Tootsie” was sung by Al Jolson, playing the role of a young jazz singer known as Jack Robin nee Jakie Rabinowitz.

Lyrics

Toot, toot, Tootsie, good-bye!
Toot, toot, Tootsie, don’t cry
The choo choo train that takes me
Away from you no words can tell how sad it makes me
Kiss me, Tootsie, and then
Do it over again, watch for the mail, I’ll never fail
If you don’t get a letter then you’ll know I’m in jail
Toot, toot, Tootsie don’t cry
Toot, toot, Tootsie, good-bye

Toot, toot, Tootsie, good-bye!
Toot, toot, Tootsie, don’t cry
The choo choo train that takes me
Away from you no words can tell how sad it makes me
Kiss me, Tootsie, and then
Do it over again, watch for the mail, I’ll never fail
If you don’t get a letter then you’ll know I’m in jail
Toot, toot, Tootsie don’t cry
Toot, toot, Tootsie, good-bye

About Limehouse Blues
“Limehouse Blues” was written for a British revue, Andre Charlot’s Revue of 1924, which was imported to New York and introduced Gertrude Lawrence to America. The song concerns life in London’s Chinatown. The song has a standard place in the jazz repertory, with recordings by Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet and the Dave Brubeck Quartet in addition to the recording by Tony Bennett.

Lyrics

And those weird China blues
Never go away
Sad, mad blues
For all the while they seem to say

Oh, Limehouse kid
Oh, oh, Limehouse kid
Goin’ the way
That the rest of them did
Poor broken blossom
And nobody’s child
Haunting and taunting
You’re just kind of wild

Oh, Limehouse blues
I’ve the real Limehouse blues
Can’t seem to shake off
Those real China blues
Rings on your fingers
And tears for your crown
That is the story
Of old Chinatown

Rings on your fingers
And tears for your crown
That is the story
Of old Chinatown

About Do It Again
George Gershwin was in a meeting with his publisher, Max Dreyfus, when Buddy DeSylva walked in and said “Let’s write a hit!” Gershwin started composing on the spot. DeSylva listened for a few minutes and then sang “Oh, do it again.”  Gershwin played the song at parties, when it was heard by Irene Bordoni, who wanted to perform it in her show The French Doll.  It’s been widely recorded, including a wonderful Judy Garland recording from her 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall, released on Judy at Carnegie Hall.

Lyrics

Oh.
Do it again.
I may say no. no. no. no. no.
But do it again.
My lips just ache
To have you take the kiss
That’s waiting for you
You know if you do
You won’t regret it
Come and get it.

Oh.
No one is near
I may cry oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh.
But no one can hear.
Mamma may scold me
Coz’ she told me
It was naughty but then

Please,
Do it again.
Yes do it again. And again and again and again and again and again
Turn out the light.
And hold me close
In your arms
All through the night.
I know tomorrow morning
You will say
Goodbye and Amen.

But until then
Please do it again.

About Chicago
If there is any song associated with the great city of Chicago, it is this song. It’s been widely recorded by singers including Count Basie and Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and many, many more.

Lyrics

Chicago, Chicago, that toddling town
Chicago, Chicago, I’ll show you around, I love it
Bet your bottom dollar, you’ll lose the blues in Chicago
Chicago, the town that Billy Sunday couldn’t shut down

On State Street, that great street, I just want to say
They do things that they don’t do on Broadway
They have the time, the time of their life
I saw a man, he danced with his wife in Chicago
Chicago, my home town

Chicago, Chicago, that toddling town
Chicago, Chicago, I’ll show you around, I love it
Bet your bottom dollar, you’ll lose the blues in Chicago
Chicago, the town that Billy Sunday could not shut down

On State Street, that great street, I just want to say
They do things that they never do on Broadway, say
They have the time, the time of their life
I saw a man and he danced with his wife in Chicago
Chicago, Chicago that’s my home town
