About Oh, Lady Be Good
Lady Be Good! opened on Broadway in 1924 and featured Fred Astaire and his sister Adele Astaire. The song “Oh, Lady Be Good” is a standard and has had many fine recordings, including those by Ella Fitzgerald, Cliff “Ukulele Ike” Edwards, Artie Shaw and Fred Astaire.

Lyrics

Listen to my tale of woe,
It’s terribly sad but true,
All dressed up, no place to go
Each evening I’m awfully blue.
I must win some handsome guy
Can’t go on like this,
I could blossom out I know,
With somebody just like you. So…

Oh, sweet and lovely lady, be good
Oh, lady, be good to me
I am so awfully misunderstood
So lady, be good to me
Oh, please have some pity
I’m all-alone in this big city
I tell you I’m just a lonesome babe in the wood,
So lady be good to me.
Oh, please have some pity
I’m all alone in this big city
I tell you I’m just a lonesome babe in the wood,
So lady be good to me.
Oh lady be good to me.

About Keep Smiling at Trouble
“Keep Smiling at Trouble” was first recorded by Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians in 1924, with vocals by his brother, Tom Waring. Other noted recordings were by Jolson, Ruby Braff, Tommy Dorsey, Della Reese and Bobby Hackett.

Lyrics

When you’ve learned that life
Is what you make it
Then you know the secret of it all

Find your share of happiness
And take it
Make life a song
As you go along

Keep smiling at trouble
For trouble’s a bubble
And bubbles will soon go away

With never a sadness
And nothing but gladness
We’d weary of life in a day

Be like the violets that doze ‘neath the chilled winter snows
They bravely wait for the May

So keep smiling at trouble
For trouble’s a bubble
And bubbles will soon go away

So keep smiling at trouble
For trouble’s a bubble
And bubbles will soon go away

And bubbles will soon go away

About It Had To Be You
“It Had to Be You” is a popular standard with many fine recordings, including those by Paul Whiteman, Cliff Edwards and Frank Sinatra. It has also be used in several fims, such as Casablanca and Annie Hall.

Lyrics

It seems like dreams like I’ve always had
Could be, should be, makin’ me glad
Why am I blue?
Its up to you to explain
I’m thinking maybe baby I’ll go away
Someday, some way, you’ll come and say,
“It’s you I need”
And you’ll be pleading in vain

It had to be you, it had to be you
I wandered around and finally found the somebody who
Could make me be true, could make me be blue
And even be glad, just to be sad – thinking of you

Some others I’ve seen might never be mean
Might never be cross or try to be boss
But they wouldn’t do
For nobody else, gave me a thrill
With all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you
It had to be you

About The Girl I Love
“The Girl I Love” was originally written for the 1924 Broadway musical Lady, Be Good, though it was cut from that production. It was used again in 1927 for Strike Up The Band, but that production closed out of town. The lyrics were revised to “The Man I Love” for the 1928 Rosalie, but was cut from that production as well. In spite of all that, it rightly has its place as one of the great songs in the American Songbook. Notable recordings include those by Ella Fitzgerald, Helen Forrest, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Helen Morgan and many, many more.

Lyrics

Someday she’ll come along, the girl I love
Her smile will be a song, the girl I love
And when she comes my way
I’ll do my best to make her stay
I’ll look at her and smile,
She’ll understand
And in a little while I’ll take her hand
And though it seems absurd
I know we both won’t say a word
Maybe I will meet her Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not
But I’m sure I’ll meet her one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
I’ll build a little home, just meant for two
From which we’ll never roam; Who would, would you?
And so all else above I’m waiting for the girl I love
Someday she’ll come along, the girl I love
Her smile will be a song, the girl I love
When she comes my way
I’ll do my best to make her stay
I’ll build a little home, just meant for two
From which we’ll never roam; Who would, would you?
So all else above I’m waiting for the girl,
The girl I love
