About Mountain Greenery
Rodgers and Hart wrote “Mountain Greenery” in 1926 for one their earliest musicals, The Garrick Gaieties, where it was introduced by Sterling Holloway. It had two recordings in 1926: one by Roger Wolfe Kahn and the other by Frank Crumit. In later years, this song was recorded by Bing Crosby, Mel Tormé, Ella Fitzgerald and Tony Bennett.

Lyrics

On the first of May
It is a moving day
spring is here, so blow your job,
throw your job away

Now the time to trust
to your wanderlust.
In the city’s dust you wait
must you wait?
Just you wait

In a mountain greenery
where God paints the scenery
just two crazy people together.

While you love your lover, let
blues skies be your coverlet.
When it rains we’ll laugh at the weather.

And if you’re good
I’ll search for wood
so you can cook
while I stand looking.

Beans could get no keener
reception in a beanery.
Bless our Mountain Greenery home!

Mosquitoes here
Won’t bite you, dear
Well I’ve let them sting
Me on the finger

We could find no cleaner retreat
From life’s machinery
Bless our Mountain Greenery home!
our Mountain Greenery home

Lyrics

Stop the traffic to Dixie
Hold it right on the line
Don’t want nothing come betwixt me
And that old home of mine

I’m so tired and so lonely
Every hour seems a day
For there’s one and one only
Understands what I say

I’m comin’,
I’m comin’ Virginia,
I’m comin’ to stay;
Don’t hold it agin me
For runnin’ away.

I’ve tried to forget you
But found I was wrong;
‘Neath your bright southern moon
Once more I’ll croon
An old familiar tune.

And if I can win ya,
I’ll never more roam;
I’m comin’ Virginia,
My Dixieland home.

Been a year since you seen me,
That’s an awfully long time!
Don’t want nothin’ inbetween me
And that old home of mine.

I’m so tired and so lonely,
Every hour seems a day,
For there’s one and just one only
Understands when I say;

I’m comin’ Virginia,
I’m comin’ to stay;
Dont hold it agin me
For runnin’ away.

I’ve tried to forget you
But found I was wrong, all wrong;
‘Neath your bright southern moon
Once more I’ll croon
An old familiar tune.

And if I can win ya,
I’ll never more roam;
I’m comin’ Virginia,
My Dixieland home.

I’m comin’,
I’m comin’ Virginia,
My Dixieland home.

Lyrics

Your eyes are blue your kisses too
I never knew what they could do
I can’t believe that you’re in love with me
You’re telling everyone I know
I’m on your mind each place you go
They can’t believe that you’re in love with me

I have always placed you far above me
I just can’t imagine that you love me
And after all is said and done
To think that I’m the lucky one
I can’t believe that you’re in love with me

I have always placed you far above me
I just can’t imagine that you love me
And after all is said and done
To think that I’m the lucky one
I can’t believe that you’re in love with me
