About You Can’t Lose a Broken Heart
James Johnson, a pianist and composer who was also known as a Harlem Stride pianist, collaborated with author and producer Flournoy Miller to produce the Sugar Hill revue in 1931 for this song. Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday recorded “You Can’t Lose A Broken Heart” as a duet with Sy Oliver and His Orchestra in 1949 on the Decca label.

Lyrics

Don’t lose your head
Then lose your guy
You can’t lose a broken heart

If you ever break up
Then try to make up
It’s tough to make a brand new start

Take a walk
Think it over
While strolling neath the moon
Don’t say things in December
You’ll regret in June

Ware your remark
Before you speak
Or you may be sorry soon

Don’t be erratic
Be diplomatic
To keep your heart’s in tune

Cruel harsh words
Often spoken
Will upset your applecart

So don’t lose your head
Then lose your guy
Cos, you can’t lose a broken heart
No, you can’t lose a broken heart

About Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams
“Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams” is one of the classic Depression-era songs that hoped to help people forget their troubles and dream of better days. Bing Crosby made the first recording in 1931 with the Gus Arnheim Orchestra.

Lyrics

What price happiness? What price happiness?
Who can truthfully say?
But for every shall with tears we pay

Love is happiness. I’ve had happiness,
But it ended one day
Now I look at life a different way

When skies are cloudy and gray
They’re only gray for a day
So wrap your troubles in dreams
And dream your troubles away

Until that sunshine peeps through
There’s only one thing to do
Wrap your troubles in dreams
And dream your troubles away

Your castles may tumble, that’s fate, after all
Life’s really funny that way
No use to grumble, smile as they fall
Weren’t you king for a day?

Remember that sunshine
Always follows the rain
So wrap your troubles in dreams
And dream your troubles away
Away, away, away
Away, away, away
Away

Lyrics

Who cares if the sun cares to fall in the sea?
Who cares what banks failed in Yonkers?
As long as you’ve got a kiss that conquers

Why should I care?
Life is one long jubilee
As long as I care for you, and you care for me

Who cares if the sun cares to fall in the sea?
Who cares about a bank that failed in Yonkers?
As long as you have got a kiss that conquers

Why should I care?
Life is one long jubilee
As long as I care for you, and you care for me

About Just Friends
“Just Friends” has been a popular jazz standard , including vocal versions by Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Parker and Chet Baker. The song, both the music as well as the lyrics, seem more modern than most songs written in the early 1930s and for that reason has received interesting jazz treatments and found itself quite at home with bebop stylings.

Lyrics

Just friends, lovers no more
Just friends but not like before

To think of what we’ve been
And not to kiss again
Seems like pretending
It isn’t the ending

Two friends drifting apart
Two friends but one broken heart

We loved, we laughed, we cried
Suddenly love died
The story ended
But we’re just friends

Two friends drifting apart
Two friends but one broken heart

We loved, we laughed, we cried
Suddenly love died
The story ended
But we’re just friends

About It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing
This song was one of the first songs to use the word “swing” in the title and this song certainly defined what it meant to swing. Ellington recorded the song with Ivie Anderson on vocals and it was an immediate hit. It has been widely recorded since it was written and the song is a lot of fun to play and to listen to. Significant recordings include those by Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, Gigi Gryce, Tony Bennett and Thelonious Monk.

Lyrics

It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing
It don’t mean a thing, all you got to do is swing
It makes no difference if it’s sweet or hot
Just give that rhythm everything you’ve got
It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing
