Lyrics

Listen how our happy hearts are beating
Like the ocean beats upon the sand
And our feet in rhythm keep repeating
Every little movement of the bandSweet music soft and mellow
Soothing and slow
Strains of a mellow cello
When lights are lowDear, we’re so close together
I love you so
Why think about the weather
When lights are low?Who hearts revealing
Music hath charms
Life’s so appealing
With inspiration in your armsOur lips meeting soft and tender
Love’s all aglow
Why shouldn’t we surrender
When lights are low?

Sweet music soft and mellow
Strains of a mellow cello

I mean dear, we’re so close together
Why think about the weather
When lights are low?

Who hearts revealing
Music hath charms
Life’s so appealing
With inspiration in your arms

Our lips meeting soft and tender
Love’s all aglow
Why shouldn’t we surrender
When lights are low?
When lights are low?

About The Way You Look Tonight
“The Way You Look Tonight” was introduced by Fred Astaire in the 1936 film Swing Times; the song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the year. Dorothy Fields remarked “The first time Jerry played that melody for me I went out and started to cry. The release absolutely killed me. I couldn’t stop, it was so beautiful.” Dorothy Fields was the first woman to win an Oscar for songwriting. It’s a magnificent love song that has found a strong position as a jazz standard, with recordings by Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Mel Tormé and Frank Sinatra.

Lyrics

Someday when I’m awfully low
When the world is cold
I will feel a glow just thinking of you
And the way you look tonight

Oh, but you’re lovely
With your smile so warm and your cheek so soft
There is nothing for me, but to love you
Just the way you look tonight

With each word your tenderness grows
Tearing my fear apart
And that laugh, that wrinkles your nose
It touches my foolish heart

Lovely, never never change
Keep that breathless charm
Won’t you please arrange it because I, I love you?
Just the way you look tonight
Just the way you look tonight

About The Touch Of Your Lips
Ray Noble was a popular English bandleader who became quite popular in the US as well. After great success in London, he and his vocalist Al Bowlly appeared at the Rainbow Room in 1934. “The Touch of Your Lips” has been recorded by Chet Baker, Nat King Cole and Andy Williams.

Lyrics

The touch of your lips upon my brow,
Your lips that are cool and sweet,
Such tenderness lies in their soft caress,
My heart forgets to beat.

The touch of your hands upon my head,
The love in your eyes a-shine,
And now, at last, that moment divine,
(That look in your eyes)
The touch of your lips on mine.

About They Can’t Take That Away From Me
This song was written for the 1937 Fred Astaire – Ginger Rodgers movie Shall We Dance. Unlike most songs that Astaire introduced in his films, there was no dance number associated with “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.” It is one of the Gershwin’s finest love songs. George Gershwin died just two months after this film was released.

Lyrics

The way she wears her hat
The way she sips her tea
The memory of all that
No, no, they can’t take that away from me

The way her smile just beams,
The way she sings off key,
The way she haunts my dreams,
No, no, they can’t take that away from me

We may never, never meet again
On that bumpy road to love
Still I’ll always, always keep the memory of

The way she holds her knife
The way we danced till three
The way she changed my life
No, no, they can’t take that away from me!
No, they can’t take that away from me!

We may never, never meet again
On that bumpy road to love
Still I’ll always, always keep the memory of

The way she holds her knife
The way we danced till three
The way she changed my life
No, no, they can’t take that away from me!
No, they can’t take that away from me!

About These Foolish Things
Although written and first performed in 1936, “These Foolish Things” was not an immediate hit. In fact, Maschwitz’ agent refused to publish the song and so Maschwitz himself did. There were several fine recordings in the 1930s, including one by Billie Holiday with the Teddy Wilson Orchestra and Benny Goodman. In the 1950s, the song became even more popular, with recordings by Artie Shaw, Nat King Cole, Art Pepper and Johnny Hartman.”These Foolish Things” ranks #28 on jazzstandards.org and is still widely played and recorded.

Lyrics

A cigarette that bears a lipstick’s traces,
An airline ticket to romantic places,
And still my heart has wings…
These foolish things remind me of you.

A tinkling piano in the next apartment,
Those stumbling words that told you what my heart meant,
A fairground’s painted swings…
These foolish things remind me of you.

You came, you saw,
You conquered me.
When you did that to me,
I knew somehow this had to be.

The winds of march that make my heart a dancer,
A telephone that rings,
And who’s to answer?
Oh, how the ghost of you clings…
These foolish things remind me of you.

How strange, how sweet
To find you still,
These things are dear to me,
They seem to bring you near to me.

The sigh of midnight trains in empty stations,
Silk stockings thrown aside, dance invitations.
Oh, how the ghost of you clings!
These foolish things remind me of you…
