About You’ve Changed
“You’ve Changed” has been recorded steadily since it was written in 1941 by performers including Harry James, Jackie Gleason, Etta Jones and Billie Holiday.

Lyrics

You’ve changed
That sparkle in your eyes is gone
Your smile is just a careless yawn
You’re breaking my heart
You’ve changed

You’ve changed
Your kisses now are so blase
You’re bored with me in every way
I can’t understand
You’ve changed

You’ve forgotten the words, “I love you”
Each memory that we’ve shared
You ignored every star above you
I can’t realise you’ve ever cared

You’ve changed
You’re not the angel I once knew
No need to tell me what we’re through
It’s all over now
You’ve changed

About You Don’t Know What Love Is
This song was written for a 1941 Abbott and Costello film called Keep ‘Em Flying, but was cut from the film before it opened. The song was finally used in a B picture named Behind the Eight Ball. “You Don’t Know What Love Is” gradually became a jazz standard, as evidenced by the Miles Davis recording from 1954. Other significant jazz recordings included those by Chet Baker, John Coltrane, Anita O’Day, Sonny Rollins, Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson.

Lyrics

You don’t know what love is
Until you’ve learned the meaning of the blues
Until you’ve loved a love you’ve had to lose
You don’t know what love is

You don’t know how lips hurt
Until you’ve kissed and had to pay the cost
Until you’ve flipped your heart and you have lost
You don’t know what love is

Do you know how lost heart feels
At the thought of reminiscing?
And how lips that taste of tears
Lose their taste for kissing

You don’t know how hearts burn
For love that cannot live yet never dies
Until you’ve faced each dawn with sleepless eyes
You don’t know what love is

You don’t know how hearts burn
For love that cannot live yet never dies
Until you’ve faced each dawn with sleepless eyes
You don’t know what love is

About When The Sun Comes Out
“When The Sun Comes Out” is unusual in the Arlen body of work in that the song was not written for either a musical or a film. The song was first recorded in 1941 by Helen O’Connell with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. Other significant recordings (in addition to Tony Bennett) include those by Mel Tormé, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstein, and Judy Garland.

Lyrics

When the sun comes out
And that rain stops beatin’ on my window pane
When the sun comes out
There’ll be bluebirds ’round my door, singin’ like they did before

That ol’ storm broke out
And my man/gal walked off and left me in the rain
Though she’s gone I doubt
If she’ll stay away for good,I’d stop livin’ if she should

Love is funny, it’s not always peaches, cream and honey
Just when everything looked bright and sunny
Suddenly the cyclone came, I’ll never be the same

Til that sun comes out
And the rain stops beatin’ on my window pane
If my heart holds out
Let it rain and let it pour, it may not be long before
There’s a knockin’ at my door
Then you’ll know the one I love walked in
When the sun comes out.

About Undecided Blues
“Undecided Blues” was written in 1941 by blues shouter Jimmy Rushing (also known as Five-by-Five, due to his stature). Rushing was born in Oklahoma City into to a musical family; his father was trumpet player and his mother a singer. He started his career as an itinerant blues singer in the early 1920s. He sang with Jelly Roll Morton and other early jazz orchestras before joining the Bennie Moten band in 1929. When Moten died in 1935, he joined the Count Basie Orchestra, which was his home for many years. Rushing with the Count Basie Orchestra first recorded “Undecided Blues” in 1941. Jimmy Rushing died from leukemia in 1972.

Lyrics

Sometimes I think I do
Then again, I think I don’t
Sometimes I think I do
Then again, I think I don’t
Sometimes I think I will
Then again, I think I won’t

Tell you why
Early one Monday morning
Long about nine or ten
Early one Monday morning
Long about nine or ten
Thought about my baby
Wish I could see her smilin’ face again

If you love your baby
Tell the world you do
If you love your baby
Tell the world you do
There’s comin’ a day
Your baby will learn to love you too
Yeah

About This Time The Dream’s On Me
“This Time The Dream’s On Me” was written for the 1941 film musical, Blues in the Night which also featured the title song. Blues in the Night is a somewhat film noir musical about a down-on-their-luck band that plays blues music.

Lyrics

Somewhere, someday
We’ll be close together, wait and see
Oh by the way,
This time the dream’s on me

You’ll take my hand
And you’ll look at me adoringly
But as things stand
This time the dream’s on me

It would be fun
To be certain that I’m the one
To know that I, at least, supply the shoulder you cry upon

To see you through
Till you’re everything you want to be
It can’t be true, but
This time the dream’s on me

It can’t be true, but,
This time the dream’s on me.

It would be fun
To be certain that I’m the one
To know that I, at least, supply the shoulder you cry upon

To see you through
Till you’re everything you want to be
It can’t be true, but
This time the dream’s on me
