About Wait Till You See Her
“Wait Till You See Her” was written for the Broadway musical By Jupiter, which starred Ray Bolger. Even though the song was well-recieved in previews, it was cut prior to opening in order to tighten up the show. Songs cut from productions are often lost, but Mabel Mercer loved the song and sang it regularly in her act. Other great recordings include those by Ella Fitzgerald and Blossom Dearie.

Lyrics

Wait till you see her
see how he looks
wait till you hear her laugh.

Painters of paintings
writers of books
never could tell the half.

Wait till you feel
the warmth of her glance,
Pensive and sweet and wise.

All of it lovely
all of it thrilling
I’ll never be willing to free her.

When you see her
you won’t believe your eyes

About Trav’lin’ Light
This wonderful song was first recorded by Paul Whiteman with Billie Holiday on vocals. It’s a wonderful, classic Mercer lyric and the tune is lovely. In addition to this recording, this song has been recorded by Anita O’Day, Peggy Lee, Queen Latifah, Shirley Horn and Sonny Rollins.

Lyrics

I’m trav’lin’ light
Because my gal has gone
So from now on
I’m trav’lin’ light

She said goodbye
And took my heart away
So from today
I’m trav’lin’ light

No one to see
I’m free as the breeze
No one but me
And my memories

Some lucky night
She may come back again
But until then
I’m trav’lin’ light

About There Will Never Be Another You
It’s ironic that one of Harry Warren’s most beautiful songs was written for a Sonja Henie vehicle called Iceland, starring Miss Henie and John Payne as a U.S. Marine stationed in Iceland during World War II. The song was introduced in the movie by Joan Merrill. Amazingly, this beautiful song was not nominated for an Academy Award. No matter. The song has become a serious jazz standard and has had many fine recordings, including Bennett’s 1959 recording with Count Basie and his 1962 improvisation with Dave Brubeck at the White House Sessions. Other significant recordings include those by Lionel Hampton, Chet Baker, Nat King Cole and Sonny Rollins.

Lyrics

This is our last dance together
Tonight soon will be long ago
And in our moment of parting
This is all I want you to know

There will be many other nights like this,
And I’ll be standing here with someone new,
There will be other songs to sing, another fall, another spring,
But there will never be another you.
There will be other lips that I may kiss,
But they won’t thrill me like yours used to do,
Yes, I may dream a million dreams,
But how can they come true,
If there will never ever be another you.

About That Old Black Magic
One of the great songs by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer, “That Old Black Magic” was written in 1942 and first recorded by Glenn Miller. It was also used in the 1942 movie Star Spangled Rhythm. It’s been recorded many times and used in several films, including the 1956 film Bus Stop, where it was sung by Marilyn Monroe.

Lyrics

That old black magic has me in its spell,
that old black magic that you weave so well.
Those icy fingers up and down my spine,
That same old witchcraft when your eyes meet mine.
The same old tingle that I feel inside,
and then that elevator starts its ride,
And down and down I go,
round and round I go,
like a leaf that’s caught in the tide.

I should stay away,
but what can I do?
I hear your name and I’m aflame,
Aflame with such a burning desire that only your kiss can put out the fire.
For you’re the lover I have waited for,
the mate that fate had me created for.
And every time your lips meet mine, darling,
down and down I go, round and round I go,
In a spin, loving the spin I’m in,
under that old black magic called love.

About Take Me
“Take Me” was popular when it was first released, with recordings by Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey and Benny Goodman.

Lyrics

Take me, I’m yours if you’ll take me
I want you to make me a part of your heart
Hold me, I dreamed you would hold me
Now really enfold me, say we’ll never part

All the love I have to give
I want to give to you,
And as long as I shall live
I’ll only live for you,

Take me, and never forsake me
My darling, please take me and
Make your own.
