About I Got Los in Her Arms
This song is from Irving Berlin’s wonderful 1946 musical Annie Get Your Gun, which starred Ethel Merman and Ray Middleton. The song’s actual title is “I Got Lost in His Arms” and was introduced by Miss Merman.

Lyrics

Don’t ask me just how it happened
I wish I knew
I can’t believe that it’s happened
And still it’s true

I got lost in her arms and I had to stay
It was dark in her arms and I lost my way
From the dark came a voice and it seemed to say
There you go, there you go

How I felt, as I fell, I just can’t recall
But her arms held me fast and it broke the fall
And I said to my heart as it foolishly
Kept jumping all around I got lost
But look what I found

About Good Morning, Heartache
“Good Morning, Heartache,” is strongly associated with Billie Holiday, who recorded the song in 1946. The popularity of the song was revived when Diana Ross recorded it for the Billie Holiday biographical film Lady Sings The Blues, released in 1972.

Lyrics

Good morning, heartache, you ole gloomy sight
Good morning, heartache, thought we said goodbye last night
I turned and tossed until it seemed you had gone
But here you are with the dawn
Wish I’d forget you
but you’re here to stay
It seems I met you
When my love went away
Now everyday I start by saying to you
Good morning, heartache, what’s new?

Stop haunting me now
Can’t shake you, no how
Just leave me alone
I’ve got those Monday blues
Straight through Sunday blues

Good morning, heartache, here we go again
Good morning, heartache, you’re the one who knew me when
Might as well get used to you hangin’ around
Good morning, heartache, sit down
Sit down
Sit down

ABOUT Come Rain or Come Shine
Come Rain or Come Shine was written for the musical St. Louis Woman. The song itself is rather unusual, in that the same note repeated 12 times in the first two measures. In spite of that repetition, or perhaps because of it, the song works very well for the singer. Al Gioia in Jazz Standards says that “this composition tends to resist grandstanding, and instead appeals to the more introspective improviser.”

Lyrics

I’m gonna’ love you, like nobody’s loved you
Come rain or come shine
High as a mountain, deep as a river
Come rain or come shine

I guess when you met me
It was just one of those things
But don’t you ever bet me
Cause’ I’m gonna’ be true if you let me

You’re gonna’ love me, like nobody’s loved me
Come rain or come shine
We’ll be happy together, unhappy together
Now won’t that be fine

The days may be cloudy or sunny
We’re in or out of the money
But I’m with you always
I’m with you rain or shine

About The Best Man
This funny and rather charming song, written in 1946, has been recorded by Nat Cole, Les Brown, Peggy Lee, John Pizzarelli and Ann-Margaret with Al Hirt.

Lyrics

I guess I’ve got a heart meant
For fooling around with chicks
Because in that love department
I know all the latest tricks
Now I ran across a girl one day
She was as sharp as a girl could be
And I wasn’t surprised to hear her say
That she really went for me

She said I was the best man
Whoever knocked on her door
She said I was the best man
The fella she’d waited for

She said I was the best man
At dancing and nobody can deny
That when it came to romancing
I was the A+ number 1 guy

But then she met my best friend
And knocked him right off his pins
But still I wasn’t worried
‘Cause the best man always wins
The way it all turned out
There was no doubt
That I was best man in the end
Yes
I was the best man
When she married my best friend

So don’t you think you’re best
‘Til you pass the test
And you know all the latest tricks
‘Cause you’ll wind up as the best man
While the other guy gets the chicks

About Angel Eyes
“Angel Eyes” was used in the 1953 Jennifer. It’s a popular jazz song that has had numerous fine recordings, including those by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Dave Brubeck, and Duke Ellington.

Lyrics

Try to think that love’s not around
Still it’s uncomfortably near
My old heart ain’t gaining any ground
Because my angel eyes ain’t here

Angel eyes, that old Devil sent
They glow unbearably bright
Need I say that my love’s mispent
Mispent with angel eyes tonight

So drink up all you people
Order anything you see
And have fun you happy people
The drink and the laughs on me

Pardon me but I got to run
The fact’s uncommonly clear
I got to find who’s now the number one
And why my angel eyes ain’t here

Excuse me while I disappear
