About Soon It’s Gonna Rain
“Soon It’s Gonna Rain” is from the 1960 off-Broadway musical The Fantasticks, which ran for astounding 42 years and 17,162 performances at the Sullivan Street Playhouse.

Lyrics

Hear how the wind begins to whisper.
See how the leaves go streaming by.
Smell how the velvet rain is falling,
Out where the fields are warm and dry.
Now is the time to run inside and stay.
Now is the time to find a hideaway
Where we can stay.

Soon it’s gonna rain. I can see it.
Soon it’s gonna rain. I can tell.
Soon it’s gonna rain.
What are we gonna do?

Soon it’s gonna rain. I can feel it.
Soon it’s gonna rain. I can tell.
Soon it’s gonna rain.
What’ll we do with you?

We’ll find four limbs of a tree.
We’ll build four walls and a floor.
We’ll bind it over the leaves,
And duck inside to stay.

Then we’ll let it rain. We’ll not feel it.
Then we’ll let it rain, rain pell-mell.

And we’ll not complain
If it never stops at all.
We’ll live and love
Within our own four walls.

About Somebody
“Somebody” was written for the 1960 movie Cinderfella, starring Jerry Lewis, Ed Wynn, Judith Anderson and Anna Maria Alberghetti as Princess Charming. Count Basie also appeared in the film as himself.

Lyrics

Everybody needs to care
For somebody
All your dreams were meant to share
With somebody

Someone to have a midnight cup of tea with
To have and hold and sometimes disagree with

Yes, it’s wonderful to live
For somebody
And the most you have to give
Is your love

In a cabin or castle
Even though you rise or fall
Without somebody
You’re nobody at all

About The Second Time Around
This song is from the 1960 film High Time and starred Bing Crosby, Fabian and Tuesday Weld. In the film, Bing Crosby decides to go back to college (at the age of 51) and experiences the generation gap first-hand. But he wins everyone over and gets his degree, having a great time along the way, including falling in love with his French professor. Bing Crosby introduced “The Second Time Around” in the movie.

Lyrics

Love is lovelier the second time around
Just as wonderful with both feet on the ground
It’s that second time you hear your love song sung
Makes you think perhaps that love like youth is wasted on the young

Love’s more comfortable the second time you fall
Like a friendly home the second time you call
Who can say what led us to this miracle we’ve found?
There are those who’ll bet love comes but once and yet
I’m oh so glad we met the second time around

About Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars
Known in the original Portuguese as “Corcovado,” this is one the great early bossa nova songs. The song has a serene quiet feeling–the English title fits the mood of the song perfectly. Both Stan Getz and Miles Davis recorded jazz versions of “Quiet Nights.”

Lyrics

Quiet nights and quiet stars
Quiet chords from my guitar
Floating on the silence that surrounds us

Quiet nights and quiet dreams
Quiet walks by quiet streams
And the window lookin’ on the mountains and the sea how lovely

This is where to be
Here with you so close to me
Till the final flicker of life’s ember

I who was lost and lonely
Believing life was a only a bitter tragic joke
Have found with you the meaning of existence oh, my love

This is where to be
Here with you so close to me
Till the final flicker of life’s ember

I who was lost and lonely
Believing life was a only a tragic joke
Have found with you the meaning of existence oh, my love

About Put On A Happy Face
“Put on A Happy Face” is from the musical Bye, Bye Birdie, based loosely on the story of Elvis Presley being drafted into the Army in 1957.

Lyrics

Gray skies are gonna clear up,
Put on a happy face;
Brush off the clouds and cheer up,
Put on a happy face.

Take off the gloomy mask of tragedy,
It’s not your style;
You’ll look so good that you’ll be glad
Ya’ decide to smile!

Pick out a pleasant outlook,
Stick out that noble chin;
Wipe off that “full of doubt” look,
Slap on a happy grin!

And spread sunshine all over the place,
Just put on a happy face!
Put on a happy face
Put on a happy face

And if you’re feeling cross and bitterish
Don’t sit and whine
Think of banana split and licorice
And you’ll feel fine

I knew a girl so gloomy
She’d never laugh or sing
She wouldn’t listen to me
Now she’s a mean old thing

So spread sunshine all over the place
And put on a happy, happy face
Put on a happy, happy, happy face
Oh, come on bubby, smile its your birthday
