About Who Can I Turn To
“Who Can I Turn To” was written for the British musical The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd. Producer David Merrick saw the production in London and decided to bring it to America, starting first with a nationwide tour. Around that time, Tony Bennett made this recording, which was a hit for him; this helped bring attention to the musical and helped ensure its success in the US.

Lyrics

Who can I turn to when nobody needs me?
My heart wants to know and so I must go where destiny leads me
With no star to guide me and no one beside me
I’ll go on my way and, after the day, the darkness will hide me

And maybe tomorrow I’ll find what I’m after
I’ll throw off my sorrow, beg, steal, or borrow my share of laughter
With you I could learn to, with you what a new day
But who can I turn to if you turn away?

With you I could learn to, with you what a new day
But who can I turn to if you turn away?

About When In Rome
In the year 2000, part of his 70th birthday celebration at the Library of Congress, Stephen Sondheim chose a list of ‘Songs I Wish I Had Written (At Least in Part).’ On this list were several songs by Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh, most of which are songs that Tony Bennett has recorded including “When In Rome.”

Lyrics

When in Spain, for reasons I don’t explain,
I remain enjoying a brew,
Don’t deplore my fondness for Fundador –
You know how a Fundador can lead to a few –
And baby when in Rome, I do as the Romans do.

If per chance I’m saying farewell to France,
And romance drops in from the blue;
Cher amour, I beg of you, please endure
My taking a brief detour with somebody new –
It’s just that when in Rome, I do as the Romans do.

And though from Italy I lie to you prettily,
Why think of me bitterly? You know that I’m true –
‘Cept now and then in Rome, I get that old yen in Rome
And naturally when in Rome, I do as the Romans do.

If I write happily, “Best wishes from Napoli,”
Don’t cable me snappily to tell me we’re through,
‘Cause once again in Rome, in somebody’s den in Rome
Well pussycat, when in Rome, I do as the Romans,
Disregard the signs and the omens,
When in Rome I do as the Romans do.

About Watch What Happens
“Watch What Happens” is from the 1964 film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Tony Bennett’s was the first recording of the song, other than the film soundtrack, and the first in English.

Lyrics

Cold, no I can’t believe your heart is cold
Maybe slow to warm from a long, lonely night

But just let someone start believing in you,
let him hold out his hand
Let him touch you and watch what happens

One someone who can look in your eyes,
and see into your heart
Let him find you and watch what happens

Cold, no I won’t believe your heart is cold
Maybe just afraid to be broken again

But just let someone with a deep love to give
Give that deep love to you,
And what magic you’ll see

Let someone give his heart,
Someone who cares like me
Let someone give his heart who cares like me
Someone who cares like me

And what magic you’ll see
Let someone give his heart,
Someone who cares like me
Someone who cares like me

Lyrics

Then was then
And now is now
Don’t look back
You can’t look back somehow
Sweet was sweet
But not so bitter now
Then was then
And now is now
You forgive
And I will too
Let’s forget
Unhappy times we knew
We’ll come out
All shiny, bright and new
Then was then
And now is now
Now, now we can win
No matter what might have been
Now we can begin again
For then was then
And now is now

About Sunrise, Sunset
“Sunrise, Sunset” is from the very successful 1964 Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof, which starred the great Zero Mostel as Tevye, a poor milkman, and is set in the time of the pogroms in Russia in the early 20th century.

Lyrics

Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze

Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears

Is this the little girl I carried?
It this the little boy at play?
When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he grow to be so tall?
Wasn’t it yesterday
When they were small?

Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze

Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears
