About My Love
Paul McCartney, with Linda McCartney, wrote “My Love” in 1972 with his post-Beatles band, Wings. It was released on the album Red Rose Speedway, his second album with Wings, in 1973. The song has been sung by several popular singers in addition to Mr. Bennett, including Nancy Wilson, Cass Elliot and Andy Williams.

Lyrics

My love does it good
And when I go away
I know my heart can stay with my love
It’s understood
It’s in the hands of my love
And my love does it good.

My love does it good, oh my love
Yes I love my love
Only my love holds the other key to me
My love, my love
Only my love does to me.

My love does it good.
My love, yes I love my love
My love does it good.

About Living Together, Growing Together
“Living Together, Growing Together” was written for the 1972 remake of Lost Horizon, which was not well received by both critics and audiences. Bacharach is on record as saying that the experience of composing the score nearly ended his musical career; he was actually banned from the post-production dubbing sessions by the studio. Unfortunately, the experience also caused a rift with Bacharach’s long-term lyricist, Hal David. The two never worked together again.

Lyrics

Start with a man and you have one.
Add on a woman and then you have two.

Add on a child and what have you got?
You’ve got more than three.
You’ve got what they call a family.

Living together, growing together, just being together,
That’s how it starts.
Three loving hearts all
Pulling together, working together, just building together,
That makes you strong.
If things go wrong we’ll still get along somehow,
Living and growing together.

It just takes wood to build a house.
Fill it with people and you have a home.
Fill it with love and people take root.
It’s just like a tree
Where each branch becomes a family that’s
Living together, growing together, just being together,
That’s how it starts.
Three loving hearts all
Pulling together, working together, just building together,
That makes you strong.
If things go wrong we’ll
Still get along somehow,
Living and growing together.

Living together, growing together, just being together,
That’s how it starts.
Three loving hearts all
Pulling together, working together, just building together,
That makes you strong.
If things go wrong we’ll still get along somehow,
Living and growing
Just like we’re doing now, together.

About Little Things
“Little Things” was written by Joe Raposo for Sesame Street. Raposo, originally from Boston, came to New York and working as an accompanist and musical director for various Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. He first worked with Jim Henson in 1969 for a television special Hey Cinderella! Henson then asked Raposo to join him to work on Sesame Street. Although he left the show in 1974, he remained close to The Muppets and worked on several of their films.

Lyrics

I believe in little things
That you can hardly see
Like honeycomb and spider webs
And starfish in the sea

I believe in little things
Like icy drops of rain
That melt into the morning mist
When winds are warm again

I believe in little things
Like colors in the sky
And noticing the waves roll in
And how the flowers die

Knowing they’ll come back again
Whenever it’s July

I believe in little things
Like you and me
And just how big
Little things can be

About It Was You
This song was written for a musical that was never produced. The show went through a series of names including Beautiful People, The Magician and Encounter. In fact, it’s quite likely that this song was never published.  Tony Bennett’s is the only recording of “It Was You.”

Lyrics

Who, when, why, what happened?
Hard to say.
A hundred changing winds
May bend or break us
Shape or shake us each day.
Go through fields and faces
Fly be eyes in review
But if you ask me who, when, why, what happened
It was you.

About If I Could Go Back
“If I Could Go Back” was written for the 1973 film Lost Horizon. The film was not successful and the experience caused the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David to break up. In fact, in his autobiography, Bacharach said it was such a bad experience for him that it almost ended his songwriting career.

Lyrics

How do I know this is part of my real life?
If there’s no pain can I be sure I feel life?
And would I go back if I knew how to go back?
What good is time when you’re sure of tomorrow?
Can there be joy where there has been no sorrow?
And would I go back if I knew how to go back?
Will I find there is really such a thing as peace of mind?
And what I thought was living was really just confusion
The chance to live forever is really no illusion
And this all can be mine
Why can’t I make myself believe it?
Can I accept what I see around me?
Have I found Shangri-La or has it found me?
And would I go back if I knew how to go back?
Will I find there is really such a thing as peace of mind?
And what I thought was living was truly just confusion
The chance to live forever is really no illusion
And this all can be mine
Why can’t I make myself believe it?
