About I’m a Fool to Want You
Though Frank Sinatra was one of songwriters and sung it as well, “I’m a Fool to Want You” may be most identified with Billie Holiday, who recorded it 1958 for her album Lady in Satin.

Lyrics

I’m a fool to want you
I’m a fool to want you–
To want a love that can’t be true,
A love that’s there for others, too

I’m a fool to hold you–
Such a fool to hold you–
To seek a kiss not mine alone
To share a kiss that the Devil has known

Time and time again, I said I’d leave you
Time and time again, I went away;
But then would come the time when I would need you,
And once again these words I’d have to say:

I’m a fool to want you
Pity me, I need you
I know it’s wrong; it must be wrong…
But right or wrong, I can’t get along
Without you

Time and time again, I said I’d leave you
Time and time again, I went away;
But then would come the time when I would need you,
And once again these words I’d have to say:

Take me back…I love you
Pity me, I need you
I know it’s wrong; it must be wrong…
But right or wrong, I can’t get along
Without you.

About I Won’t Cry Anymore
I Won’t Cry Anymore was released on the same single as Because Of You. While Because of You was Bennett’s first big number one hit, I Won’t Cry Anymore reached the top twenty on Billboard. This recording is featured in Pete Hamill’s 1977 novel Flesh and Blood.

Lyrics

I won’t cry anymore, now that you’ve left me
I won’t cry anymore, now that you’re gone
I’ve shed a million tears since we’re apart
But tears can never mend a broken heart

I won’t sigh anymore, I’ll just forget you
And I’m closing the door of memories
Though you’re the one love that my arms are longin’ for
This is goodbye, I won’t cry anymore

I won’t sigh anymore, I’ll just forget you
And I’m closing the door of memories
Though you’re the one love that my arms are longin’ for
This is goodbye , I won’t cry anymore

ABOUT Growing Pains
“Growing Pains” was written for the 1951 Broadway musical A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, based on the 1943 novel of the same name by Betty Smith.

Lyrics

One day your mama drops the hem of your skirt
Next day you give up yelling what’s for dessert
You can’t explain it but you’re one solid hurt
Baby, you’ve got growing pains

Your Christmas penny doesn’t look half so bright
Papa’s not president since maybe tonight
When you’re not quite so sure that Mom’s always right
Baby, you’ve got growing pains
Nothing’s wrong, just growing pains
And they’ll never hurt too long

When there are cobwebs in dreams that you weave
When there’s no magic in the words ‘Make believe’
When doubt comes peeping out and tugs at your sleeve
Baby, you’ve got growing pains

When you come home from school and don’t slam the door
Ride down the banisters or slide ‘cross the floor
When you don’t cry for every toy in the store
Baby, you’ve got growing pains
They’re not bad, just growing pains
You’ll be awfully glad you had

About Cold, Cold Heart
Tony Bennett sings this song regularly in concert and always tells the story of how Mitch Miller played the song and asked Bennett to record it. Bennett told him he couldn’t sing it, as he wasn’t a country and western singer. He says that Mitch said he’d record it even if he (Mitch) had to tie him to a tree. “And so he tied me to a tree …” Bennett quips. It really is a beautiful and heartfelt song and was a big hit for Tony Bennett.

Lyrics

I tried so hard, my dear, to show that you’re my every dream
Yet you’re afraid each thing I do is just some evil scheme
A memory from your lonesome past keeps us so far apart
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?

Another love before my time made your heart sad and blue
And so my heart is paying now for things I didn’t do
In anger unkind words are said that make the teardrops start
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?

There was a time when I believed that you belonged to me
But now I know your heart is shackled to a memory
The more I learn to care for you, the more we drift apart
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?

About Anywhere I Wander
“Anywhere I Wander” was written in 1951 by Frank Loesser for the film Hans Christian Anderson, where it was introduced by Danny Kaye. It’s been recorded several times, lately quite well by Liz Calloway, who named her Frank Loesser album Anywhere I Wander.

Lyrics

Anywhere I wander, anywhere I roam

Her arms were warm as they welcomed me
Hers eyes were a fire bright
And then I knew that my path must be
Through the ever haunted night

Anywhere I wander, anywhere I roam
Till I’m in the arms of my darling again
My heart will find no home
Anywhere I wander, anywhere I roam

Her voice was oh such a soft caress
Of love it gently told
And in her smile was the tenderness
I may never more behold

Anywhere I wander, anywhere I roam
Till I’m in the arms of my darling again
My heart will find no home
Anywhere I wander, anywhere I roam
