Lyrics

Yesterday I heard the rain
Whispering your name
Asking where you’d goneIt fell softly from the clouds
On the silent crowds
As I wandered onOut of doorways black umbrellas
Came to pursue me
Faceless people as they passed
Were looking through me
No one knew meYesterday I shut my eyes
Face up to the skies
Drinking in the rain

But your image still was there
Floating in the air
Brighter than a flame

Yesterday I saw a city
Full of shadows without pity
And I heard the steady rain
Whispering your name
Whispering your name

About There Will Never Be Another You
It’s ironic that one of Harry Warren’s most beautiful songs was written for a Sonja Henie vehicle called Iceland, starring Miss Henie and John Payne as a U.S. Marine stationed in Iceland during World War II. The song was introduced in the movie by Joan Merrill. Amazingly, this beautiful song was not nominated for an Academy Award. No matter. The song has become a serious jazz standard and has had many fine recordings, including Bennett’s 1959 recording with Count Basie and his 1962 improvisation with Dave Brubeck at the White House Sessions. Other significant recordings include those by Lionel Hampton, Chet Baker, Nat King Cole and Sonny Rollins.

Lyrics

This is our last dance together
Tonight soon will be long ago
And in our moment of parting
This is all I want you to know

There will be many other nights like this,
And I’ll be standing here with someone new,
There will be other songs to sing, another fall, another spring,
But there will never be another you.
There will be other lips that I may kiss,
But they won’t thrill me like yours used to do,
Yes, I may dream a million dreams,
But how can they come true,
If there will never ever be another you.

About Sweet Georgie Fame
Blossom Dearie told The New York Times in 1981 “I was in London in 1966, when a bass player told me I should go hear the skiffle, rock, blues and jazz singer Georgie Fame, He said I’d like him, and I did – very much. Then I was visiting a friend, where Georgie Fame’s records were on, and her kids were dancing to them. I got a melody from that, and my friend’s sister, Sandra Black (Harris) wrote words to it.”

Lyrics

Words and music are all that I need
I will follow wherever they lead
And I’m finding more fun in the game
A groovy boy has brought us joy, sweet Georgie Fame
Oh, I heard him one night quite by chance
Now wherever I’m walking, I dance
And London is not quite the same
’cause when it sings, the city swings, sweet Georgie FameLondon Bridge is falling down
Pop songs I hear with suspicion
But now at last I’m glad to meet a sweet lovin’ real good musician
Oh, from Broadway to Festival Hall
I have listened and I’ve heard them all
And they say there’s a few million dames
That are impressed, their ears are blessed with Georgie FameSo stay a while, you’ll see ’em smile, you won’t complain
His hands and feet make music sweet, you’ll miss your train
Your goose is cooked, you’re gettin’ hooked
On Georgie Fame!!!

About Only The Young
Richard Ahlert was the son of the songwriter Fred Ahlert.

Lyrics

Only the young feel that love is a dream
From which they’ll never waken
Their world is an apple on a tree
Just waiting to be shaken

And only the young
Don’t care what tomorrow may bring
Today is a merry-go-round
With a big, brass ring

We both can stay young as a morning in May
A warm and sunny green time
I’ll hold you and love you every day
They’ll be no in between time

Though years may go by
We’ll look at each other and see
The love lighted faces of only the young
Like you and me

About Love Is Here To Stay
“Love Is Here To Stay” was written in 1937 for The Goldwyn Follies movie, which was released after George Gershwin’s death. It’s also known as “Our Love Is Here To Stay,” but the published title of the song omits the “Our.”

Lyrics

It’s very clear
Our love is here to stay;
Not for a year
But ever and a day.
The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies,
And in time they go.
But, oh, my dear,
Our love is here to stay;
Together we’re going a long, long way.
In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble,
They’re only made of clay,
But our love is here to stay.
